WOUNDED AMBASSADOR

KING'S MESSAGE OF SYMPATHY BRITAIN SENDING NOTE TO TOKIO United Press Association—Copyright (Received August 20, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, AugUßt 28 King George has sent a message of sympathy to Sir Hughe Knatchbull-Hugessen, British Ambassador to China, in connection with the severe injuries he received when a Japanese aeroplane attacked his car while en route from Nanking to Shanghai. Lady Knatchbull-Hugessen has arrived in Shanghai. She went immediately to the hospital and was told that her husband's condition was excellent. He had had a good sleep. The British Government is telegraphing to the Charge d Affaires at Tokio a Note for presentation to the Japanese Government. The Morning Post says that Britain is demanding an indemnity. The Japanese Ambassador to Britain, Mr. Yoshida, visited Mr. Eden this afternoon to convey the regrets of his Government at the incident. A despatch from Tokio states that the Japanese Vice-Min-ister of Foreign Affairs called at the British Embassy there and expressed sincerest sympathy regarding the attack. The Cabinet considered the incident but delayed decision on measures it will take pending 'results of the investigation by authorities on the spot. The Tokio correspondent of the Daily Telegraph, reporting by radio telephone, states that Japan is apprehensive regarding the outcome of the shooting of Sir Hughe Knatchbull-Hugen-sen. Some people in Japan are asking whether the incident might not lead to British intervention on behalf of China. Beyond expressions of regret from the Japanese Foreign Office and Admiralty, states the correspondent, there is an absolute refusal to make any official statement. Not a single Japanese newspaper comments on the shooting, obviously acting on Government instructions.
