MEAT EXPORT SEASON

THREE CLASSES HIGHER LAMB SHIPMENT RISE INCREASE IN CHILLED BEEF For the current season from October Ito August J ls exports of three classes of meat —chilled beef, lamb and boneless beef —exceed those of the corresponding period of last season. For some months pork shipments also have been running above those Of last year, but according to the figures issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board the position has now been reversed. Shipments of chilled beef totalled 182,150 quarters, against 130,627 quarters in the same period last year. Frozen beef exports at 134,833 quarters compare with 188,433 quarters. Mutton shipments have fallen from 1,021,791 carcases to 1,420,365 carcases, but lamb has increased from 8,042,618 carcases to 8,252,724 carcases. A total of 556,013 carcases of pork was exported, against 587,527 carcases, and 222.555 bags of boneless beef, against 207,788 bags. Killings of stock for export in the periods from October 1, 1030, to August 15 compare as follows: —

Sundry stocks of all the above classes were higher than at August 15, 1936. Stocks loaded 111 vessels not departed from New Zealand at August 15 compare as follows with the figures at the same date last year, which are given in parentheses:—Chilled beef (quarters), ( —); frozen beef (quarters), 13,872 (3003); wethers (carcases), 20,8(38 (21.872); ewes (carcases), 29,034 (22,820); lambs (carcases), 203,409 (133,985); porkers (carcases), 14.835 (15,732); bacouers (carcases), 7156 (1478). MARKETS AT SMITHFIELD GOOD DEMAND FOR LAMBS The Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice regarding the Smithfield market from its London of lice as at tihe close of business last week:—"Wethers: The market is quiet and unchanged. Ewes: Trade is slow. Lambs: There is a good demand at present prices. Quotations: — Wethers, light, sid to 5Jd per lb.; heavy, to sid; ewes, 3id to 4id; lambs, twos, 7£d to 7jjd; eights, 7*d to 7£d; fours, 7£d to 7id; seconds, 7ld to 7id. COUNTRY STOCK SALES OTGROHANGA VALUES ALL CLASSES IN DEMAND Abraham and Williams, Limited, Tc Kuiti, report having held their sale at Otorohanga, when "a full yarding of sheep, consisting mostly of hogget# that have wintered in the district, came forward. There was also a good penning of cattle and pigs. There was a good demand for alt classes. The hoggets were in good condition, many of them having been wintered on swedes, and prices as a rule were in advance of vendors' expectations. Cattle of all classes were in good demand, dairy classes selling well, while yearling Jersey heifers made up to £5. Pigs were rather easier than at the previous sale. HIGH AVERAGE AT NGAHAPE The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, Hamilton, report that at a clearing sale held at Xgabape, Te Ku«a. on account of Woolly Brothers, the herd came forward in nice order and attracted a large gathering of buyers. Although individual records were not available, the knowledge that factory returns were over an average of 300lb. fat, was partly responsible for the splendid sale. The lot of approximately 05 head, including a number of hei/ers, were mostly good class Jerseys, and were all accorded brisk competition. A very satisfactory average in the vicinity of £lO was secured, while top price for cows in milk was £l3 15s. A number of sows and store pigs also met with quite a good sale. Quotations: —Good quality young dairy rows, in milk, made £l2 5s to £l3 15s; medium, £lO to £ll 15s; plainer class cows. £S to £U los: inferior, £5 to £7 IDs; springing Jersey heifers, £7 15s to £10; smaller, up to £7 10s; large white sows, with litters, £0 5s to £8; Berkshire sow with litter, £(» 7s Od; porkers, £2 Os; store pigs, 20s to 335. PIOPIO CATTLE FAIR ! Abraham and Williams, Limited, report holding their spring cattle fair at Pioplo, when more than the advertised entry was penned. The class was good, consisting mainly of yearling steers and heifers bred in the district, the majority of which had been wintered on swedes. There was a good attendance of buyers. Competition was good and a steady sale resulted. Yearling steers were not quite up to last year's rates, while heifers were making better values. Grown cattle were in good demand, as were breeding cows, the yarding of both these classes being small. The top price for yearling steers, £0 10s, was received by Carlyon Brothers. The top price for yearling heifers was made by Mr. Purdie's line, at £5 is. Among the sales were '2B yearling Hereford steers from Carlyon Brothers at £0 los. Polled Angus steers from the same vendors making the same figure; 08 yearling steers from Mr. L. (5. Purine sold at £0 ss; 13 from Mr. W.
