OFF-SIDE RULE
VISITORS' " GROUCH " PRAISE FOR HALFBACK SAXTON IMPRESSES CRAVEN [by TELEGRAPH I'll ESS association] TIMARU, Sunday "In the match to-day wo saw the best scrum-half we have met so far on our tour. I am not snying that because he is present, but because it is a fact." Those remarks wero made by D. Craven, vice-captain of the Springboks, at a dinner to the teams in Tinuiru last night, when referring to tho play of tho South Canterbury half, C. Saxton, who took part in tlio All Black trials. Craven also took the opportunity to refer to the oll'-sido rule, stating that, if visitors had a grouch, it was in regard to the interpretation placed on the rule by New Zealand referees. South African referees had a different interpretation, and it was his opinion that it was because of tho i 111(!rprotation of tho rulo by Now Zealand referees that tho visitors had not seen the outstanding backs in this country that they had expected to see. In his opinion loose forwards wero killing tho backs, particularly tho halves. While they had a grouch, said Craven, they bore no ill-feeling. They simply found it hard because of tho manner in which tho rulo is interpreted hero.
