LETTER TO CONSTABLE
INDECENCY ALLEGED INSURANCE AGENT CHARGED [BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION"] ASHBURTON, Saturday A search of many days by detectives among business houses resulted in the appearance in the Police Court 3Testerday of Roger Frederick Patterson, insurance agent, charged with sending through the mail an indecent letter to Constable T. Harris, of Ashburton. The letter, which was of a most indecent nature, tfas signed " You Swine." Detectives investigated scores of typewriters before deciding that the letter had been typed on one in the office of the United Friendly Societies' dispensary. It was stated by experts that the letter was typed on the United Friendly Societies' machine, and the signature bore characteristics shown in the accused's specimen writing. Accused stayed at the hotel where Constable Harris stayed, and he was prosecuted by Constable Harris some time ago for drinking a glass of ale at table. It was stated by the manager of the United Friendly Societies that accused never had access to tho type- j writer. j
The accused pleaded not guilty. The 'hearing was adjourned for a fortnight.
