1938 Austin Programme Announced
A BIGGER cnr to fill tlio gap between the "Seven" and the "Ten," the Austin "Big Seven" wns introduced at Longbridge 011 July 14. This entirely now model, as its name implies, supplements the Austin range as an enlarged version of the famous "Seven." Ifc has a four-door saloon body, a new chassis and power unit, with\"livo" rubber engine mountings, low periodicity springing and full Girling brakes. The bodywork is generously equipped with large-dial panel instruments in addition to a rear panel, which encloses the spare wheel or serves as a- luggage platform. The specifications also include compensated voltage control. The power unit, although only rated at 7.9U2 horse-power, develops 25 brake horse-power at 4000 revolutions per minute. Radical alterations to the chassis and body work of the "Eighteen" also have been made and the new Windsor saloon provides exceptionally generous accommodation for seven persons. Features of the new bodywork are the wide doors, the flat floor unobstructed either by controls, transmission tunnel, or footwells, the luxurious equipment including provision for adjustment of all thf? scats, and footrcsts and folding tables for tho rear passengers. lever of tho pistol grip type has been mounted beneath tho dash. The sliding roof is flush fitting and the body is sound insulated throughout. Notable new chassis features are tho "live" rubber engine mountings, twopiece propeller shaft with rubber mounted bearing in the frame cross bracing, and the low periodicity springs with provision for lubrication by oil. A second "Eighteen" saloon, to bo known as the Norfolk, will lie available on the shorter chassis and this will follow exactly the details of the Windsor, but with a slightly shorter back compartment and without occasional seats. New Seven and Ten vans also aro bcinj/ put into production.
