DEEPER AND DEEPER

Soundings of the ocean in the North Polar Basin are still being taken. When the sounding instruments were first sent down from the Soviet ice-floo near the Pole they touched bottom at 4290 metres, or something over two miles. A further sounding gives the depth at about two miles and a furlong, and it seems that the ocean may deepen along a line drawn from south to north.
