Lizzie Does Her Best

DEAR BOYS AND GIRLS.— •TO-DAY I am going to tell you a little story from South Africa. 1 Lizzie was small and brown, with fuzzy, dark hair. She was ten and this was her first " job," therefore she was very solemn and eyed her completely new set of clothe*■'■with awe. It was not a very hard job, for her charge was a little white baby only one year old, and to Lizzie fell the task of keeping the baby from crawling into forbidden corners and filling her mouth with odds and ends unsuited to her Lizzie was very surprised when she found she must brush her teeth tnree times daily and continually wash her hands. For two days not a word passed her lips. She carefully listened to orders given her and learnt that if she were sent to fetch any article she .must bring it on a little salver; not in her hand. " Run / and fetch another chair, Lizzie," said her mistress one afternoon, seeing a visitor crossing the lawn. 4 , , The chair did not arrive, however, and on investigation a weeping Lizzie was " Mees," she said.
