Warnings to Cricketers
fyfß, H. M. HERMAN'S addition to the literature of cricket consists partly of instruction addressed to "chaps of about ten years to seventeen years of age" and partly of cricket chat. From the chapters on instruction we will quote the tip: "Eye, bat, ball and bowler's hand should be in one straight line," and add that Mr. Herman would have his batsman keep his right foot still until he can move down the pitch at the speed of Macartney. We have not the mathematical lore to distinguish between this period of waiting and infinity, and we are absolved from criticism because the book has been recommended by Sir Pelham' Warner. The; 1 chat includes a Who's Who of famous cricketers, a glossary of terms, anecdotes, verses and "Thoughts about Umpiring." Of the sketches by Mr. Thorpe Dixon some are cautionary. The colliding fieldsmen in "Listen to Your Captain!" mighty come from a cricketer's "You've Been Warned."
"How's That?" A little book on Cricket for Boys and Beginners. By H. M. Herman. Forewood by Sir Pelham Warner. Introduction by Trevor Wignull. (Hutchinson.)
