PROPOSAL AT PUKEKOHE IMPROVING CONDITIONS [from our own correspondent! PUKEKOHE, Friday Considerable time was given at the annual meeting of the Pukekoho Men's Christian Brotherhood to a discussion on Maori welfare in the district.
The president, the Rev. H. H. Jeffreys, said that' most of the local Maori people were either landless, or far removed from any land in which they might have an interest. There was an urgent need for improvement in their existing housing conditions, health and education. He advocated the appointment of some controlling body to guide and direct Maori - welfare in the district. Mr. J. N. Massey, a member of tho Maori Land Development Board, outlined the work that had been accomplished through tho board, and was in Erogress for. the rehabilitating of the taoris upon their own lands. The meeting unanimously expressed its appreciation of the efforts of the Government to reinstate the Maori people on their own lands. It also decided to ask the committee of the brotherhood to invite delegates from the Franklin County Council, the Pukekohe Borough Council, the Tuakau Town Board, the Women's Institute, the Women's Division of the Farmers' Union, and the Maori people to attend a meeting with a view to appointing a Maori welfare board in the district.
