LIVE-PIGEON SHOOTING
Sir, —Despite all protests the livepigeon shooting competition was held at Morrinsvillo. Tho report makes one full of indignation that such an exhibition of wanton slaughter of defenceless little domestic birds should be permitted by public opinion and given approval by those in authority on these matters. No wonder the question, are wo really civilised, is often asked. The mental picture Of strong, able-bodied men taking aim at a small inoffensive tame bird fills one with disgust. Is there no other outlet for their prowess with gun or rifle? On'o understands the ambition of men and boys for distinction as "a good shot," but to find its gratification in tho direction of livepigeon shooting is beyond one's comprehension. A rifle range would be more to the point, would givo practice and might serve a useful purpose in selfdefence in the not distant future. But if tho desire to kill something as well is so strong it would show' at least manliness to go to the wilds after dangerous big game, where the hunter takes risks and has his skill, courage and endurance tested to the full. But in the name of decency leave domestic tamo birds out of sports shooting contests. Emily Fordham. Otahuhu.
