COMING AUCKLAND SEASON The approaching season of the Don Cossack Choi; of Russian singers, which begins at His Majesty's Theatre next Saturday night, is being awaited with interest by lovers of high-class entertainment in Auckland. Already the Don Cossacks have attracted over 18,000 people to their concerts at Wellington, while at present they are being received with equal enthusiasm in their tour of the South Island, A Wellington critic, describing the impression that the Don Cossack Choir made on audiences, said "It was a new and alien note the singers struck, but the beauty of their art, the out-of-the-way quality of their voices, the astounding control, the organ-like tone and precision, the thunder of the massed attack, the delicate loveliness of their pianissimo, will long remain a cherished memory.'" The men are all trained church singers, possessing a remarkable variety in voice range. It is not only the massive strength of the basses that commands attention, but the trebles and altos contribute the quality to the singing which is most strange, and probably the most pleasing, to New Zealand audiences. The dancing, which includes the famous Sword Dance, is of a standard comparable with that of the singing, and combines with it to make a programme which is rarely approached for variety and interest.
