TROTTING AT EPSOM FOOTBALL AND HOCKEY Strong fields are engaged and some splendid racing should bo provided at the Auckland Trotting Club's opening meeting of the new season to be held at Alexandra Park to-day. If the weather continues to bo lino the going should bo in good order. Betting will be on the win and place system. r Hug by enthusiasts aro promised exciting football at Eden Park this afternoon. when tho semi-finals of tho Jubilee Trophy competitions will be played. Tho main game between Marist and Grammar Old Boys will see tho meeting of two fine packs of forwards. In tho curtain-raiser University will play North Shore. Results of to-day's games in tho Auckland ltugby League's senior championship will have considerable bearing on championship honours, as several teams aro well placed on tho ladder. Richmond and Newton are to provide the principal contest, while the curtain-raiser will bo between Ponsonby and Marist. The modal competition in the senior division of tho Auckland Football Association's championship will bo continued to-day. The Auckland hockey team will defend the New Zealand Challenge Shield this afternoon against the Poverty Bay representatives, tho game being set down for decision on tho Remuera grounds. As a curtain-raiser tho Auckland junior representatives will play the Rodney\team. The first round of the Devonport Shield .competition for. club teams will also be decided. Basketball competitions will be continued at tho Windmill Road courts under the control of tho Auckland Basketball Association. An inter-club relay race, for which a number of Auckland harrier clubs have entered teams, will be decided this afternoon over a "round-the-harbour" course. Cycle clubs also have arranged competitions..
