NEW ZEALAND ELEVEN CRICKET AT CANTERBURY ITOST INNINGS TOTAL 18G KENT 213 FOR TWO •By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, August 25 The New Zealand cricketers to-day began a match against Kent at Canterbury. Batting first the visitors were dismissed for 186 runs. When stumps were drawn, the county had 213 on the board for the loss of only two -wickets. F. E. JWoolley (now in his 51st year) made the top score of 79. The match is being played as one of the attractions at the Canterbury festival week, and tho Kentish side is as follows: —Valentine (captain), Chapman (former captain of England), Chalk, Levett,'Ashdown, Woolley, Ames, Todd, Wright, Harding and Lewis. New Zealand omitted Lowry, Page, Wallace, Donnelly and Gallichan. After the first half-hour the wicket developed considerable life, assisting Todd (fast-medium, left-arm), Harding |(fast-medium, right-arm), and Wright [(leg-breaks and googlies, of a most unusual type, almost as fast as Roberts and Dunning). Fine Eighth Wicket Stand Although Moloney scored steadily with well-timed and well-placed strokes, teven wickets were down for 94. Roberta and Tindill, in a fine fighting stand, then added 91 at the rate of a run a minute. Roberts hit eight fours, including six "copy-book"' off-drives. He was dismissed by the fastest piece of stumping of the tour. Tindill mado neat strokes to fineleg and through the slips, and scored three boundaries. Kent batted in a manner appropriate to the occasion of the carnival. Woolley, carefree and almost casual, smote all tho bowlers. Although he was dropped twice he gave an entertaining display, and hit 10 fours. Roberts Bowls Well The other batsmen evidently believed attack to he the best form of defence and scored quickly. Roberts followed his resolute hatting display with fine bowling. A catch was missed oft him in the slips and two snicks went just out of reach of fieldsmen. Several times he beat tho bat and narrowly missed the stumps.
