STERN DEFENCE SHOWN
SETTLEMENT CONDITIONS CALMER BRITISH TROOPS ARRIVE IN CITY (Received August 26. 11.30 p.m.) SHANGHAI. August 26 Fighting with extraordinary determination the Chinese have brought to a standstill the Japanese drive toward Shanghai, forcing the attackers fiercely to contest every inch of ground. The possibility of the intrusion of either army in the International Settlement is now considered to be more remote. All places of amusement have been closed and curfew is enforced between 10 p.m. and dawn. However, the arrival of British and other troops has had a calming effect and most firms have reopened their businesses. Independent observers express the opinion that the Japanese pressure, especially from the warships, is too strong.
