PROPELLER; SHAFT REPAIRS TASK AT WELLINGTON ; •- [bt telegbath—own correspondent] \ -WELLINGTON, Thursday Since she returned to Wellington from the south on Sunday, the Ellerman vessel Citv of Shanghai has been prepared for the replacement of t|i9 fractured section of her propeller shaft, in which a bad flaw was found on July 10, when the ship was 10 days' steam from Auckland on her passage from New York. The work of temporary repairs took three days and nights, but the en* gineers had done a job that carried the ship safely to Auckland, where she arrived on July 31. A cabled order was sent to England for .1 new section of shafting, and it arrived at "Wellington yesterday on the Rangitane. A contract for permanent repairs was let to William Cable and Company, Limited, of Wellington, and work was started on Monday. To get the damaged shaft out. the tunnel had to be opened up for about 25 feet by the removal of plates and frames. The damaged section of the shaft, which measures 22ft. 3in. iu length, has a diameter of 14|in. and weighs 0 tons locwt., was lifted out.of the tunnel with blocks and tackles yes* terday The new section will be lilted out of the Rangitane this • morning by thfl floating crane Hikitia, which will lower it into position in the City of Shanghai* It is expected that this main job and other minor repairs will be. completed by Saturday.
