The work of temporary repairs took three days and nights, but the en* gineers had done a job that carried the ship safely to Auckland, where she arrived on July 31. A cabled order was sent to England for .1 new section of shafting, and it arrived at "Wellington yesterday on the Rangitane. A contract for permanent repairs was let to William Cable and Company, Limited, of Wellington, and work was started on Monday. To get the damaged shaft out. the tunnel had to be opened up for about 25 feet by the removal of plates and frames.
