HOUSE CONDITIONS
WORSE THAN EXPECTED ————— r. 'v ' CITY SURVEY RESULTS WORK TO BE EXTENDED FURTHER AREAS INCLUDED The housing survey in the city has revealed conditions to be considerably worse than was anticipated when it was agreed to confine the investigation to certain of the more congested areas. It has therefore been decided by the City Council to extend the work to several small localities adjoining the district already covered. Reporting to the council last night the city engineer, "Mr. J. Tyler, said that nearly all of the 14 investigators' districts had-been covered in the survey and the office work had been completed for five of these. He estimated that the whole of the field and clerical work for the defined area would be : completed in about a month's time. In view of the conditions which had been revealed he suggested that the defined area should be extended..to include the middle portion of Grey Lynn, a small part of Ponsonby immediately northward of Jervois Road, Jhe south-eastern area of Parnell and a small portion of Remuera adjoining the borough.of New-' market. ? It was estimated that in addition to* the 12,500 to 13,000 dwelling units within the defined area this extended portion contained some 1500 units. lir selecting the extended localities, con« sideration had been given to nearness to the main lines of communication, as it was in these areas that overcrowding was most likely to be found. It was suggested that particulars regaling houses which were found to be well above the standards required by the Housing Act should be excluded from the survey. The engineer's report was adopted.;.
