FIFTY YEARS AGO
RUSSIA IN THE BALKANS Russia's ambitions in the Balkans were the source of considerable anxiety to other European Powers half a century ago. Following is an extract from a leading article in the New Zealand Herald of August 27, 1887: — "From a cable message appearing today it would seem that the Court of St. Petersburg, not satisfied with their attempts ,to intimidate the Porte into pursuing the suicidal course of forcibly preventing Prince Ferdinand from assuming the sovereignty of Bulgaria, has proposed a' joint Ottoman and Russian Commission to control the affairs of that country. It may be assumed that Turkey will not commit the folly of allowing herself to be ensnared into a policy which would ultimately result in not only the subjugation of Bulgaria, but also in placing Constantinople at the mercy of Russia."
