THE DAIRY FARMER
g; r) —"What a sad position tlio _ Now Zealand dairv farmer has got himself into in allowing the dairy industry to become the plaything of politicians! He made his first big mistake in asking a former Government for legislative authority for a Control Board. Then, following a long period of bureaucratic control, came the new phase of control by civil servants, with the result that to-day the farmer has no say at all. For instance, if a number of farmers desire to form a new company and build a factory, they have to apply to a civil servant for permission to do so. Another body of civil servants tells the farmer the factory ho must send his cream to. A third civil servant takes charge of the marketing of the dairy produce without the farmers' consent, and so on. Suppliers appoint their own directors to run their concerns, _ jet what is there left for them to direct when the'disposal of the produce is. taken out of their hands? The civil servants are the real directors. Occasionally the farmer is told by a Minister or some highly-placed civil servant or the representative of one of the Government selling agents who happens to be visiting N6w Zealand that 'the present marketing scheme is a hnge success: wo are gradually, overtaking the Danes, etc." but 110 one worries himself about the views of 'the dairy farmers regarding tlio matter. Manacled, handcuffed and legroped bv legislative enactments the dairy farmer, formerly looked upon as the backbone of the country, has become an object of pity, in fact, a Berf. Old-timeb.
