DELIGHTFUL CONCERT

CHAMBER MUSIC SOCIETY WORKS OF GREAT MASTERS An interesting programme of vocal and instrumental music was presented last night by the Auckland Chamber Music Society at its third concert for the season. An appreciative audience filled tho Lewis Eady Hall. The major part of the programme comprised three instrumental numbers, each of which is an outstanding example of the work of the respective composers, Mendelssohn, Cesar Franck and Schubert. Variety was provided by a group of songs given by Miss Berta Oarr. Mendelssohn's trio in D minor, opus 49, was first prosented, and its four movements, with their varying moods, gave the performers opportunity to display their artistry. The trio was played bv the well-known Auckland artists M iss Helen Gray, violin; Miss Marjorie Tiarks, 'cello; and Miss Kathleen O'Leary, piano. Following /this number Miss 'Berta Carr delighted her listeners with tho songs " Apres un Rove," by Faure, a request number sung in French, and " The Soldier's Wife," sung in Russian, "Night'' and "Spring Waters," by Rachmaninoff. Franek's great sonata in A major for violin and piano was played with feeling by Miss Gray and Miss O'Leary. Tho two soloists gavo a delightful rendering and received well-merited applause at tho conclusion of tho splendid fourth movement. The concert caino to a worthy conclusion with Schubert's lovely "Trout " quintette, played by Miss Gray, violin; Miss Lois Walls, viola; Miss Marjorie Tiarks, 'cello; Miss Kathleen O'Leary, piano; and Mr. Karl Engel, double bass. Tho pure melodies of the quintette, which is one of Schubert's greatest compositions, were rendered with good balance, and the fourth movement, with its theme from tho song which gives the number its name, was particularly enjoyable. Before the programme opened the audience stood in silence in memory of Mr. R. E. Fenton, whoso death occurred last Friday, Mr. R, Hipkins paying a tribute to his work as president of the society.
