STOWAWAY IMPRISONED
EARLIER SIMILAR OFFENCE TRACED BY FINGER-PRINTS "The Court's suspicions about ac-, cused were well founded, as on sending his finger prints to Wellington it was found he jvas convicted 12 months ago as a stowaway under' another name," said Sub-Inspector Fox in the Police Court yesterday, when Montague Assender, farm labourer, aged 25, appeared for sentence on an admitted charge of stowing away on the Tamaroa at Wellington on Juno 21. Mr. Fox said an uncle in Wellington had previously, promised to take care of accused, and ho, made the same offer again. Accused had been ordered to appear for sentence if called upon within six months, on condition that he paid the fare involved, amounting to £9, which he did. Later he apparently left Wellington without saying anything to his relatives and took farm work. Mr. Wyvcrn Wilson, S.M., said accused seemed to make a practice of stowing away, and his employer did not give him a good reference for industry. Leniency was extended last time, but promises were not kept, and leniency could not again bo expected. Taking into account the fact that accused had already been in custody for about ID days'' awaiting penalty, he would be sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment.
