CATHEDRAL PLAN
APPEAL FOR FINANCE
SUM OF £75,000 WANTED
ENDOWMENT FUND INCLUDED APPOINTMENT OF ORGANISER To supplement the substantial bequest of the late Miss M. T. Horton for the erection of a new Anglican Cathedral in Auckland, it has been decided to institute an appeal to the people of the diocese for £50,000 to add to the £OO,OOO which is expected to be produced from the bequest. A further £25,000 is to be asked for as an endowment fund.. The appeal is to bo made in the name of the Cathedral Building and Endowment Fund. A resolution to undertake this appeal at once was passed at a meeting yesterday of the cathedral building committee, which is co-operating with the General Trust Board. The committee, under the chairmanship of Archbishop Averill, was set up in October, 1935, by the Diocesan Synod and was given authority to proceed with arrangements to ensure that the terms of Miss Horton's bequest should bo followed. Co-ordination of Efforts It was also decided at yesterday's meeting to appoint the Rev. R. G. Coats, vicar of St. Luke's, Mount Albert, as organiser for the fund. This stop will guarantee that the appeal for £75,000 will be properly co-ordinated. The decision to proceed with the appeal at once will, it is hoped, enable the foundation-stone to be laid during the centenary celebrations in 19JO. It is also hoped that a sufficiently large portion of the building will have been completed for it to be used during the church's celebrations in 1912 to mark the centenary of the arrival in New Zealand of Bishop Selwyn, who acquired the sito in Parncll where the new cathedral is to be built. Provisions of the Bequest
According to the provisions of Miss Horton's will, the General Trust Board of the Auckland Diocese, or other controlling authority, was required to accept a competitive design for the cathodral within seven years of her death, which occurred in May, 1935. Arrangements to hold this competition were advanced considerably last week bv the appointment of the eminent English architect, Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, It.A., to act as sole assessor in the competition. Another provision of the will required the building to be started within 10 years of the testator's death, and with the successful inauguration of the appeal it is hoped that building operations will be commenced well within the time limit. Mr. Coats will be given assistance in his parish while he is organising the appeal.
