LINER AWATEA

TRIALS AFTER OVERHAUL SPEED OF 26 KNOTS MUCH-IMPROVED APPEARANCE (Received July 27, 0.15 p.m.) SYDNEY. July 27 The liner Awatca to-day underwent trials after having been docked for overhaul. She broke all her previous records by attaining a speed in the open sea of 2G knots, using six boilers. The liner is much improved in appearance now that her funnels have been heightened. The Union Steam Ship Company's passenger liner Awatea, which entered the intercolonial service a year ago, was withdrawn in May for alterations at Cockatoo Dockyard, Sydney, her place being taken by the Maunganui. Her funnels have been heightened 9ft. to increase efficiency and to clear her smoke from her decks. A new typo of propeller gearing has also been installed. The Awatea will resume in the service when she leaves Sydney on Saturday for Auckland, where she is due on Tuesday. On her speed trials on the Clyde last year the Awatca attained a speed of more than 23 knots, her contract speed being 22} knots.
