NATIONAL UNION PLAN
MAJORITY IN FAVOUR RESULT OF POSTAL BALLOT The result of the postal ballot hold last Wednesday among employees of fins works throughout New Zealand 011 the question of forming a national union was received in Auckland yesterday. Voting papers were' distributed to approximately 1700 workers in all gas works in the Dominion, including municipal plants, and the result of the ballot shows that 1306 votes were east. Those voting in favour of the national union numbered 1037 and those against 219.
There are 14 unions concerned in the gas industry, some of tho workers comprising only a section of a union, and the supporters of tho national scheme considered that a»ich "a union possessed advantages both for the workers and the industry. With 11 different awards it was contended that all sorts of anomalies occurred that could be obviated by one award governing the whole industry. Among those concerned in tho ballot wero clerical workers. Skilled tradesmen substantially engaged in tho gas industry did not take part in tho ballot, but it is expected that they will now be given an opportunity of voting on a similar issue. The ballot was conducted by the Secretary of Labour.
