apprentice system AUCKLAND APPLICATIONS 25 CONTRACTS APPROVED Since the acting-Minister of Labour, the Hon. P. C. Webb, suggested that difficulties attendant, on the placing of youths of 18 years and upwards in the skilled trades might be overcome ia many instances by using the adult apprentices»system, there has been a large number of applications to tha Labour Department in Auckland from those desirous of taking advantage of the opportunity presented. A total of 2~i adult apprentice con-, tracts in Auckland have been approved and completed by the acting-Minister since April 1, and he is now investigating many other applications. The ages of apprentices concerned in the contracts completed range from 18 to 30 years. Mr. Webb has acted under section (7) of the Statutes Amendment Act, which provides that any person who lias attained the ago of 18 years and upwards may, with the. approval of the Minister of Labour, enter into a contract of apprenticeship for such period and upon such terms and conditions as in the circumstances the Min-. ister thinks reasonable and equitable. This section is in substitution of seer, tion 11 of the Apprentices Act and it«; amendments.
