MOVE BY HITLER

SPANISH SITUATION

CONFERENCE WITH ADVISERS NON-INTERVENTION CRISIS By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received July 9, 0.0 p.m.) LONDON. July 8 The Berlin correspondent of the Daily Telegraph states that Herr Hitler has summoned his advisers, including Marshal von Blomberg, Minister of Defence, and General Goering, Minister of Air, to a conference. This is to take place to-morrow, when the Non-Intervention Committee will meet in London. NATIONALISTS' AIM AN ABSOLUTE VICTORY FOREIGN TROOPS TO STAY (Received July 9, 30.45 p.m.) Times Cable LONDON, July 8 After declaring to a special correspondent of the Times at Salamanca that the withdrawal from Spain of foreign volunteers was impossible General Franco added: "I want to hear no more about conferences with the Red rulers, because the Nationalists have only one aim, namely total and absolute victory with the object of maintaining and perfecting the Nationalist regime." Tlio correspondent says this statement effectively disposes of recent rumours of a possible development in the nationalist attitude to the problem of foreign volunteers.' The Nationalists frankly are not interested in the problem because they consider a solution unattainable. The Nationalists argue tlaat the volunteers in Nationalist Spain are patriotic Nationals and therefore bound to obey orders from their Governments, whereas the volunteers in Spain controlled by Valencia are denationalised exiles who are obeying nothing but tlieir own will. Many have already accepted Spanish nationality, thus the only authority capable of removing them from Spanish soil is the Valencia Government, and any Valencian undertaking of this nature, even if guaranteed by foreign Powers, would be regarded by General Franco as worthless. The correspondent adds that recent rumours that General Franco is seeking Britain's friendship owing to alleged differences with Italy and Germany are equally unfounded.

BASQUE IRON ORE BRITAIN FEARS FOR SUPPLY REBEL DIVERSION TO GERMANY LONDON, July 8 British iron and steel interests are worried by General Franco's diversion of Spanish iron ore supplies to Germany, says the Financial News. The greater part of Moroccan minerals has gone to Germany, adds the journal, in exchange for war material. "The bombardment of Almeria was significant inasmuch as the port was a centre of an iron ore district," the paper says. "There is reason to fear that the Basque supplies which Britain needs and helps to finance also will be diverted to Germany." Signor Gayda, in an article in II Giornale d'ltalia alleging that the British Ambassador recently conferred with General Franco's "government," states: "Britain supported the Basques in the belief that they would be able to defend their minerals. Now the Basques are tottering Britain throws them overboard and turns inviting smiles to General Franco." The article adds that both Britain and France are seeking Spanish naval zones and ports. Even Gibraltar is not sufficient for Britain. "It is a policy of economic, political and military encirclement against Italy and Germany, aiming at depriving them of freedom of supplies and freedom of the seas."

WARSHIPS' DEFENCE BRITISH INSTRUCTIONS DISCRIMINATION DENIED British Wireless RUGBY, July. 8 A denial was made to-day in the House of Commons by the First Lord of the Admiralty, Mr. A. Duff-Cooper, of a statement published abroad that British warships had received instructions to fire on insurgent aircraft which came within range, but not on loyalist aircraft. The First Lord stated that since the beginning of hostilities instructions to British warships in Spanish waters had been to defend themselves against any definitely hostile attacks by aircraft. These instructions applied, without any discrimination, to the aircraft of both contending parties.

FRENCH EXPLOSIVES THEFT BY RAILWAYMEM ALLEGED SALE TO FRANCO PARIS, July 8 Three French railways employees are to bo charged with stealing a waggonload of gunpowder, forging invoices and uncoupling a truck from a train en route to the Maginot Line. The truck was diverted to the Spanish frontier and sold to General Franco's troops.

LOYALIST OFFENSIVE VALENCIA, July 8 The military authorities in Madrid are still making an effort to relieve the insurgents' pressure on Santander on the north coast. General Miaja hurled 22,000 infantry against the rebels west of Madrid. The loyalist casualties are reported to have totalled 2000. By special arrangement.
