BOBBY CALVES

g|- rj _We had it from the responsible Minister last season, and in response to the demands of public opinion, "That the whole business would be placed on an economic and humane basis." We find, however, there is little or no improvement to date. The suggestions of the No. 1 Licensing Authority in addressing a recent conference in Auckland should surely have been addressed to the Minister. A suggestion from the Farmers' Union re slaughter on the day of collection was a valuable contribution to the conference which, with minor details, would provide a solution to the most important aspect, viz., the humane side of the business. Humane.

y Sir, —The sympathy of all humanitarians will be extended to your correspondent, Mrs. Seal, in her endeavours to ameliorate the horrible cruelties associated with the bobby calf traffic. It is indeed comforting to learn of the strenuous activities of the Hamilton Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in this direction, and I feel sure the action taken in appealing to Britain will have good results. It is deplorable that the New Zealand Government has added another broken pledge to the everincreasing number of. pre-election promises, and by doing so has forced disclosures which can only be detrimental to the general interests of New Zealand. D.M. Parnell.
