IMPOSING PLANS
EGYPTIAN DEFENCES PROTECTING NILE VALLEY ARMAMENTS FROM BRITAIN CAIRO, June 30 Since the return of the Prime Minister, Nahas Pasha, from the International Conference at Montreux which agreed to abolish the capitulations, the defences of Egypt have been greatly speeded up. Special attention has been given to anti-aircraft defences in the Nile Valley, including protection for the irrigation barrages. New armaments, including artillery, are arriving from Britain, and the Air Force is being increased by two squadrons this year. A military aerodrome may be established at Alexandria in addition to an aerodrome at Mersa Matruh (near the Libyan border), which military advisers suggest should be heavily fortified with anti-aircraft batteries and coast defences. Egyptian troops will maintain the network of trenches dug by the British two years ago.
