DIET AND HEALTH
Sir, —Representations have been made to the Government to appoint a committee to consider the report of tli,e League of Nations regarding the nutritional prevention of ill-health, and also to take into account the climatic and other conditions of New Zealand, and to make recommendations with ft view to the issue of a .brochure to every householder in the Dominion advising upon values in diet, both from a nutritional as well as an economic point of view. Mr. Horace Herring, ALP. for Mid-Canterbury, is sponsoring these representations—and he is very hopeful that the Minister of Health will take some action in the direction desired. Sphere is no movement that promises so much health and happiness for our people as a reformation of their diet in the direction which scientific investigation indicates. To a great extent, "as a man eats, so he is" —and the work of such men as Nuryum, Osborne and Sansum of the American Medical Association, Evans and Hisley, of California, Newburgh and Squire, of Michigan University, has proved that many of the diseases that afflict humanity eati be produced artificially in animals—and the food dictatorship of Dr. Hindhede over Denmark during the Great War —as well as the experiments by Professor Chittenden—prove that health and strength are dependent upon the quantity and quality of food consumed. I think that Mr. Herring should be helped and encouraged in his crusade to persuade our Government to„ place in every home, the best available information, so that the too often slender resources of mothers and housekeepers can be spent to the greatest advantage. Henry I. Haywaud.
