RADIO BEACON
WELLINGTON PREPARATIONS ERECTING STEEL MASTS Everything is in readiness for the erection of the two 75ft. three-ton steel radio beacon masts at Baring Head, Wellington. The first calm day will see these masts hoisted —a signal of the endeavour to make the approaches to Wellington harbour as safe as humanly possible. The radio apparatus itself will arrive in New Zealand shortly and by August it should bo in opera!iun. The apparatus will be by. far the most advanced of its kind in New Zealand. .A 300-feet double aerial will connect the two. masts, which are selfsupporting, having no guys. They are to be bolted down to concrete blocks 11 feet square and seven feet deep, and reinforced with steel. By one mast there will bo a winch to tighten the aerials, if and when -required. At the back of the other mast there will be a 12001b. counter-weight to keep the strain on the aerials. •
