WORK IN BRITAIN
POSITION UNDER REVIEW PROBLEMS FOR MINISTRY (Received July 7, 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless RUGBY, July 6 Referring to employment in a speech, in the House of Commons, the Minister of Labour, Mr. Ernest Brown, said that last year the number of persons available for employment rose sharply, as did those in work, reaching a record never approached since the statistics had been kept. The numbers of unemployed persons also showed a reasonable decline. All the principal industries shared in the improvement, including the contracting industries. However, although it was a satisfactory year for the Ministry, there was no cause for complacency and they could not be satisfied with what had taken place. .Mr. Brown said he proposed in September to send out his Parliamentary Secretary, with the permanent secretary of the department, to visit different divisions and to examine particularly the difficulties of elderly men and the large numbers of young men who had never had an opportunity to work at all, and of persons employed in domestic'-service. It was hoped to arrive at a cost of living index fully representative of the ordinary 'workingclass. A committee had been appointed to reconsider the question of holidays with pay
