WINTER FAIR
ST. MARY'S HOMES • CORONATION DECORATIONS An opportunity for Auckland people to give practical support to tho work of St. Mary's Homes at Otahuhu occurred yesterday at the annual winter fair arranged by the St. Mary's Homes Association and held in the Town Hall concert chamber. For 53 years tho home has been a refuge for unmarried expectant mothers, of all denominations, where they receive sympathetic help, together with medical attention and nursing. As the income of the homes at present is £SOO a year below what is required, the necessity for tho winter fair was a real ono and large numbers of people visited the Town Hall yesterday morning and afternoon to assist in augmenting the funds. The friir had a Coronation setting, some of tho stalls being decorated in red, white and blue streamers interlaced with green foliage against a background of trellis-work, while others had frontages in which small Union Jacks, crowns and other emblems of the Royal Family were prominently featured. All were well-stocked with attractive wares which were quickly disposed of. Incidental music by a trio comprising Miss M. A. Parker at the piano, Miss K. Kingsfo.rd, violinist, and Miss M. Wigg, 'cellist; songs by Mrs. Jacobs, and humorous recitations by Miss Edna Thomas were enjoyed at intervals during the day. The fair was officially opened by the Mayoress, Lady Davis, who paid a tribute to the work of the Homes. She was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the daughter of a member of the committee of management, Mrs. I'. Houghton. The Mayoress was introduced by Archbishop Averill, who also spoke briefly on the excellent work being carried out at the home, and the Kev. P. S. Smallfield, chairman of the committee of management, thanked both speakers. The stalls were in the charge of the following parishes: Produce, St. Mary's, Parnell; uakes, St. Aidan's and All Saints; Work stall, Holy Sepulchre, St. Barnabas' and Devonport; fancy work. St. Andrew's, Kpsom; sweets, Royal Oak; hooks, St. Thomas'; luncheon and tea rooms, Mount Albert. iOllerslie, St. Thomas', Otahuhu and Avpndale; kitchen stnll and flower stall, groups of helpers from various parishes.
