INFERIORITY COMPLEX
Sir, —There is in mental science no term that is more oi'ten quoted, and less understood, than "inferiority complex." If a person is shy or conscious of ignorance or lack of ability, it is put down to an inferiority complex. In reality this feeling of insufficiency is no complex at all; but a simple, and straightforward sense of' incompetence, whether real or not. On the other hand, when there is a genuine complex it in due to suppressing and sublimating that feeling. The outcome of this often is self-assertion, bullying, in short megalomania. See how a small, henpecked man shows fight and (self-as-sertion when away from home! He will tell you that he is as good as the King, and afraid of no man. Subconsciously lie "feels" the reverse, hence the cocksureness. The British, with all their faults, have no inferiority complex as ft race; hence their neglect to bother re-arming till compelled to do so. Waimate North. J. C. Fussell.
