STREET COLLECTIONS
SERIES OF REQUESTS POSITION IN THE SUBURBS ONE TREE HILL DECISIONS "I think it is high time that this council took a stand in regard to street collections, and called a halt," said Mr. W. G. Mulliolland at a meeting of the One Tree Hill Borough Council, when an application was received from the Mayoress of Auckland, Lady Davis, for permission for the Auckland Orphanages Advisory Council to hold a street collection in the borough on September 3. Mr. Mulliolland said that in many cases members of the family contributed in the suburbs and the workers gave in the city. Nobody liked to refuse the collectors, but the position should not be allowed to get out of hand. He suggested that the request should be referred to the Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association.
"in view of the fact fchat permission has been "panted by the City Council, L do not see that we will come to any good in refusing," said the Mayor, -Mr. I. J. Goldstiiie. He explained that local bodies had already fixed the list of collections it was prepared to grant, but said that there must always be special occasions.
Permission for the collection to be taken was granted. It was also decided to refer the matter of street collections generally to the Local Bodies' Association for discussion. The Society for the Protection of Women and Children requested permission to hold a collection, having consented to the Hospital Auxiliary taking the entire proceeds of the joint collection already authorised in the city. The request was referred to the Local Bodies' Association, with the opinion that one day was enough for both organisations. The St. John Ambulance Association was granted permission to hold a street collection in the borough 011 October 20. Appeals from the "i.M.C.A. and the Open l>oor Mission for financial aid were referred to the Finance Committee for a report.
