SUSTENANCE PAYMENTS t NEW SYSTEM DESIRED .Reference to the distress ami hardship caused to women and children in cases where sustenance or reliei' payments received hy the husband were not paid over to the wile was made at an executive 'meeting of the Society for the Protection of Women and Children in the society's rooms on Monday afternoon. It was decided to recommend to the Minister that arrangements should he made for sustenance and relief allotments for the family to he paid direct to the wife on hci application. The reports for the month showed that a total of 88 cases had been dealt with, involving G57 office interviews. Many serious charges had been handled. The inspector had made four attendances each at the Magistrate s and Children's Courts and paid 121 visits to homes and institutions. Hie sum of> £202 in maintenance money had been received and paid to clients during the month. Mr. J. B. Donald, who presided, was 'unanimously re-elected chairman foi the ensuing vear, and a welcome was extended to 'the following new members of the executive: —Adjutant Baird the "Rev. J. Hirldlestone, and Air. F. K. Hunt. The Rev. H. Johnson, of St. Matthew's "Dock Street Mission, was elected a vice-president of the society.
