PERSONNEL OF VISITING TEAMS The Auckland Rugby League has arranged for two" representative sides to play against Auckland teams at Carlaw Park to-morrow. The South Auckland representatives, which will play the cur-tain-raiser, are said to be a strong combination, while Taranaki includes many promising young players lacking only in experience. ALL BLACK FORWARD MATAIRA JOINS CITY Advice has been received that Ilawea Mataira, the Hawke's Bay and New Zealand Rugby representative, has decided to play League football and will play for City in the Auckland Rugby League's senior competition. Mataira is a fine type of forward and represented the All Blacks in Australia in 1!»:{-!. He was also a member of the Maori team which visited Australia under the captaincy of G. Nepia in 11)35. REFEREES' ASSOCIATION MATCH AGAINST WELLINGTON It was decided at a meeting of the Auckland Rugby Referees' Association last evening to accept a challenge from the Wellington Association for a match to be played in Auckland on September 2.3, the same day as the third test match between New Zealand and the Springboks, providing a suitable ground is available. Mr. ,T. A. Malcolm and Mr. G. Peace were appointed to attend the meeting of the South Auckland Referees' Association at Pukekohe next Monday to read papers on the advantage rule and positional play. Mr. J. Polkinghorne was elected a member subject to his passing the oral examination. COUNTRY CONTESTS MATCHES IN THE PROVINCE Rugby competition and representative matches in Auckland provincial centres on Saturday resulted as follows: — Opotiki,—Fine but cold conditions favoured the matches played at Opotiki. The matches in the club competitions resulted:—Senior: Maori Players, .5, v. City, 3. Junior: City, S, v. Torere, S. A team from the' Apanui sub-union visited Opotiki and played a friendly game with the Tc Huia Club, the visitors securing a win by t> to 0.

Whakatane.—Whakatane and Rangitaiki drew, 3-alI, after a fast and open game, a feature of which was the excellent dribbling rushes of both packs. Whakatane Rugby Union competition games resulted:— Poroporo, 11, v. Whakatane, 8; Taneatua, 3, v. Paroa, 0. In the Rangitaiki competition Awakeri drew with Edgecumbe, 3-all; Tc Teko, l(i, beat \latata, 13. Waihi.—Heavy rain and a muddy field greeted players when Waihi met and defeated Te Aroha in the first Poland Cup match of the season, which was held under the auspices of the Thames Valley Rugby Union on Rugby Park. Waihi won by 14 to 3. For Waihi L. Murray scored two tries and D. Sylney and S. Wolfenden one each, D. Ainsley converting one. Te Aroha's score was a try by J. Rae. Te Aroha.—ln the Sharebrokers' Cup match played at Te Aroha Waihi junior representatives defeated Te Aroha juniors by S to 3. The came was for the most part a struggle between the forwards. Jury and Woodland scored for Waihi, the latter converting his own try, and Pipe scored for Te Aroha. In a senior grade curtain-raiser Tui Maoris defeated a combined team by 0 to 3. Abraham and Armstrong scored for Tui and Parris for the combined team. Kaitaia.—The first scries in the second round of the Mangonui Rugby competitions was played on Saturday. Ahipara seniors, by defeating Kaitaia, have gone to the top with six points. Kaitaia and Awanui are even, with four, and Houhora is at the bottom, with two.
