RAIN NEEDED

AREAS IN AUSTRALIA FEED SHORTAGE THREATENED SOME LIGHT SHOWERS FALL * _____ [FROM OL r R OWN COHRKSPONDKNT] SYDNEY, May 28 Marly winter rains throughout New South Wales have been very disappointing, and in many parts of the State there will be a shortage of water and feed for stock unless rain falls within a few weeks. Whcatgrowers generally arc somewhat apprehensive, although the position is not yet desperate. Planting was unduly delayed in many areas, particularly in the west, by lack of rain, but now most of the sowing has been completed. Most of the seed was sown on dry land, in the hope that sufficient rain would fall to ensure good germination. Fortunately li<£ht rains fell at this critical stage, and in parts of northern Hiverina and the southern and central slopes the falls were sufficient to promote winter growth. Generally, however, the rain this month has only been sufficient for germination, and another fall is required before the winter begins. Many grazing areas, particularly in parts of the north-west, are facing the prospect of a serious shortage of winter feed, and during the last two months, every light shower has been welcomed. Stock has been hand-fed on many holdings. There is also a shortage of water in many places, including areas close to the city, where it has been found necessary to cart water for household needs and to irrigate vegetables and other crops. The State meteorologist said last night that the prospects for rain were good. The promise of useful rain over the agricultural and grazing areas had, however, appeared almost as good on several occasions recently, but sudden changes in the atmosphere had militated against rain, although other States, notably Western Australia and South Australia, had benefited. Nevertheless there was reason to bo hopeful that rain would fall before tho winter.
