INSTITUTE AFFAIRS

AUCKLAND FEDERATION POOR QUALITY OF FLOUR CHEAPER FRUIT DESIRED The nature of the work of organising and visiting the various women's institutes throughout the Auckland federation area was described by Mrs. Stanley Phillips, president of the Auckland Federation, at the bi-annual council meeting held yesterday in the Milne and Clioyce Reception Hall. The financial statement showed a balance in hand of £l5O in which was included £59 for the Nora Lewis cot fund and £3B from donations to the Auckland Federation. A remit asking that the Government should be urged to improve the quality of flour and also that it should enable cheaper fruit, especially oranges, to be made obtainable, was presented. It was contended that housewives had much difficulty in getting good results from the flour at present sold and also that the health of the people was suffering as a result of its poor quality. With regard to the latter half of the remit, a member stated that she had been in touch with an Auckland fruit importer who had assured her that within 21 days abundant supplies of oranges would be arriving. The remit was passed. A recommendation from the executive that each institute should send to its own Parliamentary representative a resolution supporting the scheme for the endowment; of motherhood was also passed. A further plea for the establishment in New Zealand of women police was made by the federation in a remit asking that the federation should support the National Council of Women in its efforts toward this end. It was pointed out by a member that tliCj work of women police would be of a preventive and protective nature and would also relieve of this type of work the Auckland "purity squad," comprising members of the Auckland police force who, in plain clothes, patrolled beaches, cabarets and parks. Remits dealing directly with institute affairs included one asking that the treasurer's travelling expenses, together with an allowance for luncheon, should bo paid from federation funds. This was carried.

Reports of work were submitted by Mrs. A. Cherry, delegate to the National Council of Women, Mrs. W. H. Teape, delegate to the Auckland Hospital Auxiliary, Mrs. C. Revell, from the Dominion executive, Mrs. Moloney on the drama work, Mrs. Mitchell on the institute journal and Miss E. M. Piggot, on the organising work.

Mrs. L. S. Rickerbv, who with Mrs. Teape judged the institute competition for the Dorman banner, announced the prize winners as follow: Matakohe Institute, 1; Albany and Matarere Institutes, 2; Glenbrook institute, 3.
