CITY'S FIRST SUCCESS

GOOD MARGIN OVER NEWTON City gained its first win of the season by defeating Newton in the match at Glen Eden Park. The City team was rearranged, McDonald and Raymond being absent from the forwards, and Rata from the backs. Play in the first half was very scrappy, neither team settling down to combination, and the spell ended without any score. City improved considerably in the second half and the backs were seen in some nice movements, from which tries resulted. McLaughlin made a good opening in a passing bout, from which Tawhai scored. A little later McLaughlin was again prominent in nice play. Mapi scoring. City was now well on. top. Getting the ball in his own half Tawhai threaded his way through the defence for a good try by the posts, which Wiberg converted. McCarthy, breaking through the ruck, was responsible for the next try, which was scored by Wiberg. McLaughlin and Tawhai were the outstanding backs for City, both playing good games. Belshani played a sound game at fullback. The forwards were a very even set and gave their backs opportunities by winning most of the scrums. For Newton Dempsey played well at fullback, while the Brimble Brothers were prominent for some nice work on attack. Ginders played a good game among the forwards. Mr. R. Otto was referee.
