DAVIS CUP

NEW ZEALAND PLAYERS SOUTH AFRICAN TEAM MET STEDMAN'S FINE VICTORY By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright (Received May 9, 3.5 p.m.) LONDON, May S Singles matches between New Zealand and South Africa in the second round of the Davis Cup contest were played to-day at Brighton. The results were : V. G. Kirby (South Africa) defeated C. 15. Malfroy, 7 —5, 6—2, 6—3; A. C. Stedman (New Zealand) defeated N. G. Farquharson, 7—5, 6—3, 3—6, 6—2.

Stedman found his driving length quicker than the South African player, but the games went with the service until the score was 4-all. Farquharson was then serving and volleying strongly and captured the New Zealander's service to make the score 5 —4. Stedman, playing line passing shots and catching the South African with the ball 'at his feet, regained the lead at 6 —o. He held his own service for the set.

Defeat of Farquharson

Farquharson's brisk volleying failed in the second set against Stedman's ground strokes and wide-angled drives. The Js'ew Zealander broke Farquharson's service for 2 —l, after which he was never threatened.

Stedman, in opening the third set, lost touch and Farquharson, pressing his advantage, went ahead to 4 —o. Stedman then recovered and kept his opponent running. He won three games but Farquharson was too far ahead and decided the set with a clever back-hand drop shot which he used frequently. In the fourth set Farquharson led 2—o. However, Stedman made a magnificent rally and did not relax the pressure. Attacking with forehand strokes he frequently passed the South African at the net and won six games in a row.

Kirby Too Good for Malfroy

Both Malfroy and Kirby started raggedly from the ground. Five games went against the service before Kirby held his and increased his lead to 5 —2, when he over-hit a set point shot. Malfroy took advantage of the lapse, improved his length and evened the score but the South African, storming the net, took the set. Malfroy led 2—o in the second set when Kirby found better form, driving hard and angling deep corner shots. He won the set without being troubled by Malfroy, who was still inconsistent. Kirby went ahead at 2 —o, in the third set, winning eight points in a row. Malfrov's game had improved but lie still lacked attack. Hfl held his service until Kirby won the ninth game and match.
