COSTUME EVENING

OTAHUHU KINDERGARTEN A presentation of youthful gaiety was staged at the Otahuhu Public Hall on Friday night when the mothers' committee of the Otahuhu Free Kindergarten held its annual fancy costume ball. The many varied and original fancy dresses worn by the young people were seen to full advantage against the contrasting hall decorations and combined to provide a spectacular and colourful scene. This was seen at its best in the grand march which was directed by Messrs. J. E. Gillies and W. Dawson, assisted by the kindergarten director, Miss Lane. During the evening dances were contributed by Peggy McAnulty and Josie Johnston .and a number of games for the children were arranged. The accompaniments and dance music were played by Mesdames A. McPherson, J. E. Gillies and C. R. Jones. The children were entertained to supper under the direction' of the committee, which comprised: Mesdames Gilmore, J. Gordon, C. E. Turner, J. Squire, McAnnally, W. Pee, C. Jones, Trainer, Neil, Montgomery, and Misses Chandler, Parry and Lane. The awards for costumes were: — Under three years, girls, Barbara Clegg (Coronation): special, Pauline Gardiner (early Victorian); boys, Adrian Lane (bumble bee); special, Bruce Gilbert (Tarzan); under five years, girls, Bay Edmonds (night), 1, Christine Gardiner (Bo Peep), 2; bovs, Glen Robinson (music goes round), 1, Ronnie Walls (rajah), 2. Under seven, girls, Mavis Lamb ("what mothers are for"), 1, Betty Squire (Pierette), 2; boys, Wally Carter (balf-and-halt), 1, Douglas Pye (Golliwog), 2. Under 10, girls, Peggy Sonunerville (spider s web), 1, Peggy McAnulty (queen), 2; bovs, Arthm Snooks (Static), 1. Megan Davies (Robin Hood), 2. Lnder 14, Girls, Blodwin Davies (page), 1; bovs, John Lovich (Charlie Chaplin), 1.
