SPECTACULAR PLAY

HONOURS TO MANUKAU In a fast and spectacular match Manukau took the honours from Marist by a margin of seven points. The bustling tactics of Marist troubled Manukau in the first spell and the latter's rearguard made several errors. H° w : ever after the interval, Manukau gained possession more often from the scrums and the team combined in some brilliant movements There was some feeling shown in the forwards at one stage in the second spell and blows were struck. Tho referee quickly dealt with tho incident, although two players at least were a little lucky in not being ordered off. The turning point in the match was when Hemi scored a fine solo try. Manukau was awarded a free-kick in a handy position and the Marist plavers were caught napping when, instead of taking a kick at goal, Hem quickly gave a short kick, picked up and evaded two opponents to score at the corner. This brought tho score level and Manukau assumed control from this stage. A fine movement was when Brimble intercepted and ran strongly before kicking. Broughton gathered well and Hemi and iMurton came into the rush, Hemi making a good opening for Murton to- score. , Watene, the Manukau fullback, did not handle so well as usual, but otherwise gave i a sound display. Broughton played well at centre, while Brodcrick ran strongly on the wing and thrilled the crowd by, twice hurdling opponents—a dangerous practice, which lie would be well advised to stop. Murton showed plenty of dash on the other wing and Brimblo made some nice openings at five-eighths. An outstanding game was played by Hemi at second five-eighths. Ho did some fino work on attack and his defence, strong kicking and general all-round play were invaluable to the team. Mahima played a heady game at halfback and is one of the most improved plavers in the code. Gault was the best forward and he was well supported by Rickit. Ivawe and Phillips. Glover played a good game at fullback for Marist and came through a hard task with credit. Donovan was seen in some tricky runs at centre, but generally went too far. Crocker played well at halfback, but (he five-eighths were too slow. The Marist forwards put up a fine performance and all did well, with Finlayson, Anderson and Breed always to the fore. For Manukau, Murton (2) and Hemi scored tries. Hemi and Watene each converted . a try and kicked a penalty goal. For Marist Donovan and Breed scored tries. Anderson converting both. Mr. M. Wetherill was referee.
