UNTIDY TRAMCARS

Sir, —The rcplv by the general manager of the Auckland Transport Board to my letter relative to the lack of cleanliness in our tramcars is by no means convincing and does not disprove my assertions, which were made from actual knowledge of the facts. The general manager states that specific reports of imcleanliness will be investigated. Who is going to make such reports 1 What is wanted is a general clean-up. A large part of the trouble of is due to the nse by smokers of v the non-smoking compartments in the cars and the removal of the middle partition in the new type of car, thus permitting smokers to use the whole car and not a separate compartment. There are still some men and a number of women (thanks be) to whom smoking is an objectionable habit, and yet it is a common practice in these days to see men smoking in the non-smoking compartments of cars, while the conductors permit them so to do. Hardly ever, if at all, nowadays, do the conductors request the offenders to desist, or move to the proper compartment of the car. I wonder if they are ever instructed in this matter or advised not to check the growing habit. Soon it will be "sit where you like, smoke as much as you l'ke, and never mind your neighbour." The system needs attention in many details. 1 have referred to only some of them. Auckland Lover.
