HARBOUR BRIDGE SCHEME

CITY COUNCIL'S ATTITUDE MR. W. J. LYON, M.P., HOPEFUL The position of the Auckland harbour bridge proposal was reviewed by Mr. W. J. Lyon, M.P., in an address at Northcote last night. The stage was reached recently, he said, when the Prime Minister, Mr. Savage, asked for an expreseion of opinion from the people of Auckland regarding the matter. Mr. Lyon said he had been in touch with the Auckland City Council, which had the matter under consideration, and he anticipated a favourable expression of opinion. In the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Eraser, they had a Minister who was favourably disposed toward the project, and who believed that the • bridge should be built, and it was only a matter of time when this would be done. Mr. Lyon added that he had persistently advocated the erection of the harbour bridge since he had represented Waiteniata in Parliament, and he was hopeful that the proposed structure would be started before long. He certainly was optimistic that this would be prior to the next election. He did not Kav this as a political promise, and if the proposal failed he would not hesitate to tell the electors so.
