MILK IN WINTER

XO SHORTAGE LIKELY ASSURANCE OF PRODUCERS PLENTY OF FEED PROVIDED The possibility of a shortage of milk during the winter was discussed by members of the Auckland Metropolitan Milk Council at a meeting yesterday, when considering a producer's application for a licence for a permanent town milk supply. Mr. E. F. Andrews said he had been at a meeting where it had been stated there was a possibility of a definite shortage this winter. The chairman, Mr. I. J. Goldstine, said he had heard that was the position. A well-known representative of the producers had made that statement.

"There is no shortage at the present time," said Mr. C. L. Smith, one of the producers' representatives. "During the past week when conditions for production were most severe the requirements of the city were met with a little to *pare." Mr. Smith added that there was no fear of any mid-winter shortage this season, and there would be no difficulty about winter production as farmers had worked their herds so ihey would hava as much milk &s possible during June and July. Farmers generally had plenty of ensilage and hay for the cold weather.

The Chairman: As a representative of the producers you give an assurance that there is not likely to be a shortage during the winter 1*" Mr. Smith: I feci quite confident that ample supplies will be available. Provided sales remain as they are, tho present licence-holders will be able to supply the milk. The chairman said that if fuHher supplies were required for the schools or for other purposes the council could consider the position. Mr. H. F. W. Meikle said that if producers went over from town supply to butter-fat as had been suggested a few days ago many people would be left without milk.

The application for a licence was deferred.
