FIGURES FOR MARCH INCREASED NUMBER OF COWS [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Monday The number of cows tested by the New Zealand Co-operative Herd-Test-ing Association in March was 102,960, as against 58,178 in March, 1936. and 94,272 in March, 1935. There was a slight reduction in the average milk and butter-fat yield, due to seasonal conditions, compared with March of last year, but the production was well above that for March, 1935. The 102,'i960 cows yielded an average of 5311b. milk and 27.21b. butter-fat, with a test of 5.11. Jn March, 1936, the 88,178 cows produced an average of 5471b. and 27.81b. fat, with a 5.09 test. The ( 1935 figures %vere: —94,272 cows, 4821b'. milk, 24.21b. fat, and 5.03 test. There was a dry spell in the autumn of that year. Two groups tied for first place last March, Hikaia and Hikutaia. The 149 cows in the Hikaia group gave an average of 6461b. milk and 321b. fat, and the 737 cows in the Hikutaia group 6081b. milk and 321b. fat. Matangi produced the highest herd in the association, the yield of the 46 cows averaging 491b. fat. The best individual producer was a Te Kawa cow. which yielded 1001b. fat for the month
