WOUND IN RIGHT ARM DEATH FOUR DAYS LATER TOOK GUN BY THE MUZZLE [bv telegraph—own correspondent] KAWAKAWA, Tuesday As the result of a gunshot wound in the right arm, received on Friday, Alfred Frederick Bird, aged 18, an employee of the Karetu Timber Company, died in the Kawakawa Hospital to-day. The accident occurred when deceased, with his brother and Mr. Turi Sullivan, was cleaning a drain on the road, leading to the mill. He took his gun to work with him, intending to shoot rabbits, which are numerous in the locality. The gun, which was loaded in both barrels, was placed on a bank near by. Some time later a hawk flew overhead. Deceased seized the weapon by the muzzle, and, as he was pulling it toward him, one barrel exploded. The charge entered the right forearm, travelling up the arm into the armpit. Deceased was immediately conveyed to the Kawakawa Hospital, where he died at 1 p.m. to-day. An inquest will be held.
