WINTER SHOWS

ENTRIES FOR HAMILTON ADVANCE ON LAST YEAR [from our own correspondent] HAMILTON, Tuesday An increase in entries in every section of the Waikato Winter Show is reported by the secretary, Mr. W. H. Paul. Entries closed on Saturday and, although the complete figures are not yet available, they are said to be well in advance of those for last year. Considerable interest is being taken in the photographic salon, which, it is thought, will be one of the outstanding items on the show programme. One of the judges, with experience of 18 salons, has declared that, he has never seen better photographs. Workmen are working at pressure in Bledisloe Hall on the preparation of the various courts, and exhibits have already begun to arrive. The Railway Department has advised that it will not .be possible to organise school parties, owing to the infantile paralysis, but it has arranged a programme of special excursions to Hamilton during show week.

WHANGAREI EXHIBITION KNCOURAGIN(i PROSPECTS [from our own correspondent] WHANGAREI, Tuesday The Winter Exhibition to be held at the end of June by the Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society gives every indication of being a record one for North Auckland. The committee has invited the acting-Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Eraser, to open the show. Inquiries for space are very satisfactory, and there is a waiting list for trade exhibit space. Although the society will have 3200 square feet more space than last year available under cover, it is doubtful if this will be sufficient to meet requirements. An additional area of about two acres has been secured for the amusement part of the show and the inquiries for space in this connection are so numerous that it is doubtful if this additional area will be sufficient to meet the demand. A feature of previous shows has been the many novel events performed in the streets of the business area and finalised at the show building. This year several novelties will be introduced of an even more attractive nature than those of previous shows. Another interesting feature will bo introduced by the beekeepers, who are putting on an exhibit of a hive, which will be placed in a specially constructed cage. A member of the Beekeepers' Association will be in attendance to demonstrate daily the hive in operation as in the field. The society is endeavouring to arrange sheep-shearing demonstrations. The wool court, which proved so attractive at the last show, will be greatly enlarged and further developed for this year's exhibition. Other features for the improvement of the show are being considered by the committee.
