PROBLEM IN GOLF
LIFTING BALL ON GREEN The following golf problem was recently raised by a member of the Avondnle Golf Club in Christehurch: "A player picked up his ball on the putting green and cleaned it, as ho was entitled to do. However, on replacing it, be found that there was still a piece of dirt adhering to the ball. He then picked it up again and cleaned it properly. Should lie be penalised? Opinions here are divided. The rule savs that a player may lift his ball and clean it once od the putting green without penalty. Was the second lift referred to merely part of the allowed act of cleaning the ball?" The question was submitted to 0. C. Clements, the wellknown professional and New Zealand champion. His reply was that the player must be penalised. He was entitled under the rule to lift and clean the ball once only. <
