GAME OF BOWLS

CLUBS CLOSE SEASON NOVELTY TOURNAMENT BT SKIP Several bowling clubs closed the season last Saturday in spite of the unfavourable weather conditions. On the Auckland green, where a noteworthy season concluded on account of the club's jubilee celebrations, a novelty tournament was played, in which 14 teams took part. The players did not know until the conclusion of play the condition which would determine the winning rink. On being drawn from the hat from several different methods it was found that the team with the highest aggregate of points determined the winner. J. A. Vincent's team took the honours, and the veteran, Tt. Darlow, materially assisted in his 6ide's win. The high standard of bowling among this season's first-vear players was pleasing. In the final contest on Saturday afternoon on the Carlton green this standard was not only maintained but also improved upon. The two skips, Butler (Rawhiti) and Horscroft (Auckland Transport), gave outstanding exhibitions. A feature of the play of tho skips was their ability to drive accurately. The Rawhiti Club has had rather a lean time in the matter of wins in Auckland Centre events- Outside the success of its youthful champion, N. P. Thomson, in singles contests, there have not been many honours brought to the club. The veteran, C. V. Langsford, with .30 odd years of play behind him, proved the winning skip in the Ellerslie Club's rink competition. The Carlton final between the teams in charge of Little and Baskiville was a hard rather than a good game and there was only a twopoints margin in Little's favour at tho finish. W. Denison. Balmoral, the season's champion, was the winning skip in a club tournament on Saturday afternoon. Ho won tho same event 12 months ago. The winter challenge games for tho Edwin stars, Denison pins and Digger badges will be resumed shortly. Two Saturday afternoon tourneys, which were very popular last season, will again figure prominently on tho fixture lists of some clubs for the winter season.
