AMATEUR WRESTLERS
OLYMPIC RULES QUESTION
On account of the fact that amateur wrestlers have now to conform to Olympic rules, the majority of the preliminary bouts seen at the Town Hall this season have been non-spectacular and have marie 110 appeal to the public. Not more than about 10 per cent of Auckland's amateurs can have a chance of gaining a place in the New Zealand team for the British Empire Games in Sydney next February. It is therefore suggested that those amateurs who have no ambitions in connection with an overseas trip should be permitted to revert to the more elastic methods of grappling. At the same time those amateurs—say the present Auckland champions and run-ners-up—could continue to make themselves more proficient under Olympic rules. Whether the controlling authorities would grant such dispensation is, of course, unknown.
